Ingredients

For the Dumplings:

1 cup all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons unsalted butter (cold, cubed)

1/4 cup milk

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Caramel Sauce:

1 cup brown sugar

1 1/2 cups water

2 tablespoons butter

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce:

In a medium saucepan, combine the brown sugar, water, butter, vanilla extract, and salt.

Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves. Reduce the heat to a simmer.

  1. Make the Dumplings:

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Cut in the butter using a fork or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add the milk and vanilla, stirring gently until the dough comes together. Do not overmix.

  1. Cook the Dumplings:

Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling dough into the simmering caramel sauce. Space them apart to allow for expansion.

Cover the saucepan with a lid and simmer on low heat for 15–20 minutes, or until the dumplings are puffed up and cooked through.

  1. Serve:

Spoon the warm caramel sauce over the dumplings.

Serve immediately with a dollop of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, if desired.
