Here’s how to make deliciously soft and fluffy pita bread at home!

Ingredients:

2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast

1 cup warm water (around 110°F or 45°C)

2 teaspoons sugar

3 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:

In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  1. Mix the Dough:

In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until the dough starts coming together.

  1. Knead the Dough:

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5–7 minutes.

  1. Let the Dough Rise:

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1–1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.

  1. Shape the Pitas:

Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten it into a 1/4-inch-thick circle (about 6–7 inches in diameter). Cover them with a towel and let them rest for 15 minutes.

  1. Cook the Pitas:

Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a baking stone or an upside-down baking sheet in the oven to heat.

Place 2–3 pita rounds on the hot surface and bake for 2–3 minutes, or until they puff up. Flip them over and bake for another 1–2 minutes.

Alternatively, you can cook them in a hot, dry skillet on the stovetop for about 1–2 minutes per side.

  1. Cool and Serve:

Remove the pita bread from the oven and place them under a clean kitchen towel to keep them soft.

Serve warm or store in an airtight container for later use.
